An intriguing sub-category of mid-century Modernist jewelry is so-called "kinetic" jewelry. Examples of this type of work make use of moving parts that are strictly decorative (versus findings, like pin catches and screwbacks, which also move, but are generally only functional). In some cases, the moving part alternates between two or more different positions, of which the wearer must choose one. In this way, the wearer becomes a (small) part of the creative process behind the jewelry piece. Brooch by "phyllis" (probably McDonald), position one. phyllis brooch, position two. Marks on phyllis brooch.
In other cases, the moving part is a pendant or other attachment that is attached but does not have fixed positions. Such pieces are dynamic, changing in appearance whenever the wearer moves. Ring by Kupitaan Kulta Oy (Finland). The silver "pod" contains a tiger eye bead and is free-hanging. Marks on ring. Both kinds of kinetic jewelry enhance the wearing experience by producing an interactivity between the wearer and the piece of art. IP: Logged |

Here are two Scandinavian modern kinetic rings. The first is by David Andersen of Norway, and incorporates a sphere of blue agate which can spin freely in its mounting. The second piece is a "Bell" ring by Alton, with Swedish import marks. There is a silver ball inside of the cylindrical body of the ring. The ball spins and slides back and forth when the ring is worn, making a tinkling sort of bell-like sound. Brent IP: Logged |

I'm guessing this Swedish piece would fall under this category, as when the wearer moves, all the dangling concave surfaces would reflect the light.
