Another item in my 'collection' that I can't figure out. Handmade silver, but is it American Indian or African? Unmarked except the #3 as shown. Any thoughts?

Vathek,

I have picked up a couple of pieces in Africa and have noticed that they are generally unmarked, as yours is except for the 3. I don't know much about Amerind silver. Try posting a close-up of the design to see if some one recognizes it.

I'd say it's likely impossible to say for sure based on that one photo. My first reaction was Pacific, possibly Philippines. But it could be African; I'd say less likely Native American but couldn't rule it out based on what I can see. Or it could possibly even be South American or Asian.

As Tom suggests, photos showing the whole design might help -- but it looks like a fairly generic design, so it might not even then.

here's another photo. It's a repeated pattern, somewhat crudely done.

I have seen similar patterns on Afrcian cloth, wooden sculpture and even soap stone boxes, so if I had to pick, I would say "African." However, I think FWG is right: the design is too generic to be unequivically from one region.

thanks for the replies. I was hoping the 3 would trigger something. Another piece of unknown origin. sigh

It doesn't look like Native American to me. Is that definitely a "3" or could it be a foreign character?

Well I've actually found a hallmark on it, tho it is slightly smaller than 1/16". Still doesn't tell me much, but I wonder why someone can make a punch that small that would 'convey' a certain amount of information yet the design of the bracelet seems rather crude.

I can't really make it out from the photo -- is it Arabic?

If you cannot get a clear photo of the mark, then try and draw it and post the drawing or at least describe it. I suspect it will reveal a great deal about the piece.

I've gotten a new camera and thought I'd give this another try, even tho I don't know if the pics are that much clearer.
