Tonight at dinner I saw a simple pair of earrings that were very impressive. In a few weeks I will try to borrow them to photograph. In the meantime does anyone know the smith, maker's mark MG ? I was told this is the work of Mark Good from Maine.

It's Michael Good, and he's a top-notch gold and silversmith. He developed a special forging technique called "anti-clastic" which works with metal's natural tendance to curl when hammered.

I met Michael Good at a Society of American Goldsmiths and he is not only a great metalsmith, he is an eloquent speaker and a great businessman. His study of the anticlastic forms started witha workshop he took with Heikki Seppa. Seppa developed the metal vocabulary that Michael uses in his work.

Thanks for the correction.

I found an image of the earrings. The earring needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated.

Also:

quote:
Anticlastic Raising is a technique of metal forming whereby sheet metal is formed directly with a hammer on a sinusoidal (snake-like) stake. A flat sheet of metal is shaped by compressing it's edges and stretching the center so that the surface develops two curves at right angles to each other. The pattern of the sheet plays a major role in the form that will be achieved, however, many different forms can often be made from the same pattern.
