My brother has just bought the pin below, it was described as a good luck pin, sterling silver and tortoiseshell, made in the 1920's. I was hoping someone here could date it from the hallmarks and let us know where it was made and when. Also, there is a maker's mark (badly worn) if anyone can identify that it would be greatly appreciated.

The first stamp, lion passant, indicates it is English sterling silver, the second, a leopard's head, that it was assayed in London. The third stamp looks like the date letter "e" for 1920. The maker's mark may be "C&A", a known London silversmith, but I don't know who. [This message has been edited by Patrick Vyvyan (edited 10-17-2004).] IP: Logged |

Thanks very much Patrick, thats the info I'm looking for. The maker's mark is pretty worn so I doubt I'll get a real I.D. of it. IP: Logged |

The technique of this brooch (i.e., tortoiseshell with inlaid metal) is known as piqué. I have had the same brooch type (in terms of size, era, & technique) both in sterling and 9k gold before; one featured the emblem of some kind of military regiment, the other seemed to be a souvenir of Edinburgh. I am guessing that yours is either a regimental or good luck trinket (hence the horseshoe and Swastika, both good luck signs at the time). A neat piece, thanks for posting. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the info Paul. It was sold as a good luck piece but its interesting to know the technique name. Also, apologies for posting oversize pictures, I should have read the limits before posting instead of assuming they were the same as another forum I use. IP: Logged |
