While cleaning out Grandma's things, I found a beautiful Mexico silver and abalone bracelet and earrings set. They have been packed away for at least 40 years. I would be most grateful for any information anyone may offer. I don't know anything about silver jewelry, but even I can tell these are special. The earrings are screw back. On the back of each in the shape of a circle is The bracelet is about 7" long. On the back again in the circle shape is: "HECHO EN MEXICO D.F." Inside the circle is: "HA" or possibly "AA" followed by a symbol that almost resembles a feathery w (or maybe wings?). Unfortunately, the scans of the markings did not come out clear. I hope the pictures are of some help. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you. IP: Logged |

Hi. Welcome to the silver forum. I am not an expert on Mexican silver, but I can start the ball rolling with a couple of points. The marking Hecho en Mexico, DF simply translates as Made in Mexico City. The Sterling marking indicates that the object is made of a silver alloy that includes 92.5 percent silver. The 925 marking means the same thing. The HA or AA marking is likely the maker's marking but unless you can post a clear photo it would not be possible to try to give you a response as to who the maker was. By the way, your photo of the earrings is upside down. The carved abalone on them is meant to be an Aztec mask. The chin is the pointy part of the triangle shape, the eyes are in the middle of the triangle. The V shape in the broad area of the triangle is part of his forehead - making a frown. The dangly ball thingies are earrings - your earrings are wearing earrings! The quality of the carving on the abalone is not exceptionally high quality and these were most likely made for sale to tourists. Still, it is very nice for you to have something from your Granny and I hope you wear her earrings and bracelet often to remember her.
