Today's Wall Street Journal included an article entitled Why Jewelry is Slimming Down. It talked about the impact that the rising price of gold is having on jewelry makers. They are using more silver and stones. Maybe this will increase more consumers' awareness of the beauty of silver. The article also referenced several contemporary designers so I Google'd a few to see what came up. Here are a couple of interesting links:

If the larger makers are turning from gold to silver, I wonder how rising silver prices will impact smaller, studio makers. As the cheapest, and to many, most beautiful, of the precious metals, silver always seemed to be the metal of choice for makers of handcrafted jewelry. However, some of the greatest makers of the century--such as Art Smith, for example--often worked in base metals like copper & brass. Smith's large, biomorphic copper bracelets command $5000+, his necklaces even more. IP: Logged |

Hello June! Thank you for the interesting information. Can you also suggest books that may list the marks of jewelry makers, current & past? Thank you, IP: Logged |

Paul, you raise an interesting question about what materials the smaller studio jewelers will turn to if they get priced out of the precious metals market. What did they do for example, during WWII, when certain materials were unavailable for civilian purposes on a large scale? Jersey, the two main references I use for American jewelry are American Jewelry Manufacturers by Dorothy Rainwater and Trademarks of the Jewelry and Kindred Trades published by the Jewelers' Circular Publishing Company over the course of various years. On the subject of jewelry slimming down, the June 8 2006 Wall Street Journal included an article about a new alloy called 585 platinum which is a mix of 58.5% platinum and 41.5% cobalt and copper. Jewelry made from the new alloy will be marked .585pt/.415cocu and is being rolled out in stores across the US. IP: Logged |
