This ring appears to be studio made, but does have a 14k stamp followed by a capital P.

Does anyone recognize the maker?

Thanks

Doesn't look like any of the Pearson pieces I have, and they're all marked in full, PEARSON. Although mine are all silver, not gold, I suspect not Pearson in this case.

Not Pearson. The "P" stands for "plumb" and it means that the object is exactly the purity indicated (in this case, 14 karat). The law has always permitted small variations in the actual purity of an item versus what it is marked; I don't know the exact figure, but it is probably small, such as something could be legally marked 14K even if it was only, say, 13.75K. The plumb gold mark is a guarantee that your ring is exactly 58 1/3% gold (i.e., 14K). I don't know exactly when this came into use, but I believe it was around 1980, which would make sense, since the stratospheric gold prices at that time could have inspired some makers to lower gold content as far as legally possibly (or beyond), and customers may have wanted some extra assurance that the item was as represented. The "P" was not used by any one specific manufacturer.

I suspect the P does not stand for the maker's name and instead it is part of the 14K. 14KP was used to designate 14 Karat Plumb or 14/24 exactly which is .5833333. Years ago you were allowed to use 13.5Karat gold and still mark it 14K. The law has been changed and 14K must be 14/24th gold.

That's new information about the P being added to the mark. Not from the 60's either as I had first thought. Thanks for the replies.
