This is a curious 1880s Frank Whiting brooch with a seemingly unlikely combination of motifs: a crescent moon, an Shiebler-esque medallion, and a feather. The moon is stamped all over with strange, stylized animals (a bird, a prehistoric fish, a dinosaur(?), and some kind of four-legged mammal) as well as sundry geometric shapes. The brooch is marked with Whiting's trademark of a W with "sprigs" on either side. Though said in Rainwater to be a post-1896 mark, I am convinced that this mark was in use throughout much of the 1880s.
The brooch reminds me of that peculiar flatware pattern by Vansant, illustrated below (this pattern also frequently incorporated a medallion or two). I don't feel, as was suggested in some publication, that this style of decoration has any mystical symbolic meaning. I think it was just fanciful and experimental. And evidently not too popular.

Paul, I agree with you regarding the dating of the F. Whiting mark. I too have seen pieces that are very much of the 1880s with the "later" mark. IP: Logged |
