This is a Gorham gilt-silver buckle which is marked with the 1893 date mark. It is decorated with rosettes and arabesques in lovely champlevé enamel. It measures 3.5" x 2.25". In addition to the marks shown, there is a hand-scratched "VII" and a tiny stamped letter "C" (it is not the same "C" mark that is found on Hamburg and that line of hand wrought flatware, and I don't know what it means).

Could it have been from the Columbian Exposition? It's a pretty fabulous and unusual piece of Gorham jewelry. My curatorial envy is bubbling over. IP: Logged |

I wondered about it being for the Expo, but the fact that it is stamped 252 makes me think it is just a regular production piece. The only mark that puzzles me is the little "C", which I will try to photograph today. IP: Logged |
