Here is a piece that made me laugh. I've never seen anyone use their stamps to make a design like this. Also, I suspect that the little scratched mark in the center is the artist's "signature", but I can't decide what it is supposed to be. I seems a bit suggestive; do you think I have it upside down? All comments welcome! Brent IP: Logged |

The photos are there if you enter the links directly, and so far as I can see the UBB code is correct, but they don't load in-line for me either. Maybe the host doesn't allow external linking? I'm not sure. (added after: very odd - after I'd looked at the photos directly, when I reloaded the page they were there! maybe the server is just having some issues...) Some time back I posted a Peruvian spoon that used 925 as part of the design, but in the casting rather than as a mark. I think I've seen one or two other examples using marks creatively, but can't remember one right off. I would presume that to be the maker's signature, and I'd guess it's upside-down in the photo just because part looks like a W if turned over, but can't make it out fully either way. Nice clean design. [This message has been edited by FWG (edited 02-09-2008).] IP: Logged |

PS if you were wondering what I meant by entering the links directly: if you click the 'edit message' icon on a post you can see the original text including the spelled-out HTML for links. You can then copy that HTML from between the IMG tags, open a new browser window, paste it in the URL line, and go directly there. Brent, in testing other posts just now I found some of your images show up fine, others seem to have been removed. Very odd.... [This message has been edited by FWG (edited 02-09-2008).] IP: Logged |

FWG! Thanks for the help. Brent, I finally got to see the pendant. I see it is also marked 14K. What part is 14K? You're right that mark is a little peculiar. Just a shot in the dark but perhaps it might help if we knew where you got it, maybe it can be narrowed down to an area of where the smith is located. Jersey IP: Logged |

I am definitely having server issues just now. I hope they will be resolved soon! Brent IP: Logged |

Well, the server problems have been fixed, and the pictures should be appearing for everyone. It seems like just the front of the center piece is 14K. I have seen other pieces with 14K bits laid over sterling, but I have always wondered how it is accomplished. Does anyone know? It is fused under pressure and heat like Old Sheffield Plate? There are a number of ways do do it. One is to form the gold in a thin sheet, apply the decoration then solder it on. Using pressure with gold would be tricky as gold is softer than silver. Another is to goldplate the silver. The old method of mercury is no longer in use. If the picture is accurate, the gold appears to have a pebbled look to it. This can be achieved by using a cold tank. Gold plating is easier than silver plating, and can be done without cyanide. IP: Logged |

That's an intriguing pendant. If I owned it, I would wear it with the STERLING/14K marks facing out; to me that is much more interesting than the fern design. I don't have any ideas about the mark, although if you rotate it 180ş, it could look like "W Jr." IP: Logged |
