Here are a few examples of Wiener Werkstatte jewelry (Austrian Jugendstil): A Koloman Moser silver enamel bird pin... As I understand it, this is one of several whimsical animal designs for children's jewelry, some enameled and some without. I've seen a bird, mouse, and squirrel; usually pins, but I've also seen a couple of necklaces:
A large Josef Wagner (marked JW) silver & semi-precious stone pin:
A medium size Josef Wagner pin with lapis and blister pearl (along with marks):
I have been trying to find more info on Josef Wagner, but have not found out much. I believe he was one of the WW metal workers (and I think he was sometimes tasked with making the designs of others like Josef Hoffmann). I have forgotten which reference that came from. If anyone has any info on this designer, I'd love to hear it. Ironically I have two brooches designed (and signed) by him, and have never seen or heard of any other WW jewelry designed by him. - rat IP: Logged |

There is an exhibition of Wiener Werkstaette Jewelry going on at the Neue Galeri in New York city through September 1, 2008. It is a must see for lovers of the jewelry created by this firm from its founding in 1903 through to the early 1920's. There is also an accompanying catalog that is available in the museum bookstore. The museum itself is also a wonder to behold; it is an old mansion on 5th Avenue at 86th Street right across from Central Park. There is also a Viennese cafe at the museum which is a beautiful place to relax and have some fine food or drink. Neue Galerie

Thank you, June, for the recommendation. I am coming to the City for the weekend next month, and I was looking for something to go visit that I haven't been to before. IP: Logged |

Thanks for posting about that, June. I'm going to try to see it this week or next. And rat--always a pleasure to see your fabulous jewelry! IP: Logged |

In 1912 when The Newark Museum hosted its first "Modern German Applied Arts" exhibition, there was a whole section devoted to jewelry, photos of which I've looked at in our library. We didn't buy a single piece--nor a piece of silver. Arrrgh (bangs head against monitor). IP: Logged |
