The Brooklyn Museum has recently been given a juicy collection of jewelry, much of it silver, by the African-American art jeweler of Greenwich Village, Art Smith. I've seen the small catalogue/booklet for the show, and it is the finest group of his things I've ever run across. Made me painfully jealous. Brooklyn never has cared about jewelry, but Smith was originally from Brooklyn...it's a real coup for them.

Was Art Smith his name at birth, or did he name himself after he became an art jeweler? What a name! Less a name than a destiny.

Polly, this description of the exhibit says that his name was Arthur Smith, so I'd say it was a happy coincidence. Sounds like a treat for those within range, with almost a year to get there!

This exhibition honors the gift of twenty-one pieces of silver and gold jewelry created by the Brooklyn-reared modernist jeweler Arthur Smith (1917–1982), primarily from Charles Russell, Smith’s companion and heir.

The presentation of Art Smith jewelry is enhanced by archival material from the artist’s estate, such as sketches, the original shop sign, Smith’s tools, and period photographs of models wearing the jewelry, along with thirty pieces of modernist jewelry from the permanent collection by such artists as Elsa Freund, Claire Falkenstein, Ed Weiner, and Frank Rebajes.

I went to see this over the weekend & was very glad I did. Some wonderful pieces, and his tools, too.

I could have done without the music they had playing in the exhibition room, though. The whole museum had way too much multimedia racket--you couldn't get away from it. As if they thought nobody could possibly simply look at the objects & art without falling asleep, so they had to keep us entertained with sound effects. Next time I'm bringing earplugs.
