Here is a neat old bracelet made of brass with silver-plate and brass charms. This is not a bracelet assembled of collected souvenir charms, it was made as it is seen now. The face of each charm depicts a major U.S. city's skyline: NYC, Philly, LA, etc. The back of each depicts something associated with its city. Some of these are just standard fare (Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty, etc.), I bought it because I like the the Detroit wheel and the Miami diver--very Art Deco.

Since the Empire State Building is shown in the NY skyline, this dates no earlier than 1931. But based on the Deco designs, I would say not much later than mid- to late-30s.

Does anybody have thoughts about where a bracelet commemorating 8 U. S. cities at once may have been acquired? It seems like the kind of thing that may have been a souvenir of an exposition, etc.

Based on total ignorance, I'm wondering about the Chicago World's Fair of 1933...wasn't it something like the World of Tomorrow? Or Century of Progress? Is there a Chicago medal on the bracelet--it seems to be all about the "new" downtowns (just before we abandoned our downtowns for new 'burbs).

Hello Paul!

Are there any mfg.'s mark on the charms?

Ulysses, that is a good thought, there is a Chicago charm. It is the 3rd from the right in the top picture, and the third one in the bottom picture.

Jerey, there are no maker's marks anywhere. The original clasp was missing when I bought this, but I doubt that would have had any marks either.

Two thoughts. I have seen a couple of these floating around, without the hole. My understanding was that these were either markers from a board game or given out by newspapers for promotional purposes. I doubt they started out as charms. Brass charms that would have contact with skin are not a real good idea.

Hi Dale!

I would like to ask why you said that brass charms that would have contact with skin are not a good idea.

Thanks

Well the bracelet itself is brass, and it started life as a bracelet. In general I do not see brass as problematic for use jewelry material--Art Smith, Thomas Mann, and a slew of others used it.

As for the "charms" originally being board game pieces or premiums is interesting and possibility. The holes could easily have been drilled post-market.

I always get a rash from brass and had thought this was a fairly common problem. With most people, brass will discolor skin.

Dale, Might I add that that can apply to any metal to some extent. I can't wear silver for any length of time. My finger, wrist, neck etc. itches. Also gold filled items. My cousin can't wear gold of any karat it turns her green.
