Hi guys, Happy New Year! I am looking for any information on Victorian Sterling Name brooches or pins. I don't have the two i just bought on the unmentionable auction site but any info or book to check out would be most helpful. Thanks in advance!! IP: Logged |

Hi! Almost half time so I have a minute!!!! I know of no specific book to refer you too, however from what I have discovered (true or not), is that the more elaborate ones would be made as family gifts & the more plain might be for gifts for the servants. Have a great day! Jersey IP: Logged |

Thanks Jersey! If ever you know anything else, let me know. I did buy five of them this weekend so I'll be doing more research myself and let you all know what I find out. IP: Logged |

Such pins were generally given as sentimental tokens to loved ones. The range in quality reflects the range of spending abilities. People with less money bought the flimsier, more crudely constructed, and/or less elaborate examples. I do not think families gave such pins to servants. IP: Logged |

Thanks Paul! I appreciate your thoughts on the matter. I agree with you in that I am not convinced they would have given them as gifts to servants. I'm going to have to watch more of my period movies and see if I see any servants wearing such. I feel I would have noticed such a thing, but I'll let you know. I'm still searching and have contacted Miller's to see if they might have more information. Thanks again,C IP: Logged |

You would probably have luck looking in an English reference. Shirley Bury's two-volume opus comes to mind for the most detailed explanation, but there are several other smaller works on Victorian jewelry. Since those pins were so commonplace, I am sure any such reference would cover them. While I don't have those books on me right now, somebody in the forum probably does. IP: Logged |

Paul, you are just so handy. Thanks for the additional information. I would love it if anyone could send me an email or pdf of that info. from the books you mentioned. I have Miller's book which does feature about 10 variations but not much info. I'll keep searching for a bit more. Thanks again,C IP: Logged |
