Several original jewelry designs from the 1910s. These are executed in oil paint on cards measuring about 5x3.

Hi Paul! How interesting! Were they advertising pieces? Where did you find them? Jersey IP: Logged |

Jersey, I found these at a sale when I lived in Boston. They were created in-house by Shreve, Crump & Low (I have several others, some of which have the store name written on them). I used to work at Shreve's so these were a special find for me. When I was at Shreve's, I had access to the historical archives and there were many small filing drawers containing hundreds of such designs. They were kept as design archives. I'm not sure about when the designs were first painted, if they were put into production, merely kept as possible future production ideas, or created as special commissions for customers (most likely a combination of the three). At times I was asked to decorate the store displays and windows, so I would try to give new life to these old designs (and other antique Shreve ephemera from the archives) by incorporating them into my decor. It helped to convey a sense of the store's history. [This message has been edited by Paul Lemieux (edited 03-02-2009).] IP: Logged |

Hi again Paul! Very interesting story. I wonder if there would be a market for them in the art world as well. Do you know if other companies did this as well? Jersey IP: Logged |

I'm pretty sure I have seen similar pieces on eBay and/or in shops. I feel certain that this sort of thing was de rigueur at any major jeweler such as SCL that produced its own wares. I am not sure what kind of market these have in the art world or otherwise. These are anonymous, and the jewelry designs are nothing special-just standard early 20C fare. They are fascinating to me because I used to work at SCL and because I like to hoard old sketches, catalogs etc. (truthfully I get more enjoyment out of owning these design paintings than I would if I owned the actual pieces). I hoard all kinds of old sketches/catalogs of jewelry, fashion, etc. It is like owning the pieces without the investment and space consumption. IP: Logged |
