[26-1207] I am researching this Scarab and can't find marks like these anywhere in Tardy, Wyler, Divis or online. Photo of marks is terrible but I include it because I know it will be requested. The first mark is definitely a star, the second looks like a peach or an apple. Egyptian? Middle Eastern? Any help would be appreciated. This is an informational request for an estate sale purchase with no provenance. Thanks for any help...

I may be able to help a bit, but could you please clarify what you mean when you say you are asking as 'an informational request for an estate sale purchase'? Are you researching this to sell or to buy? IP: Logged |

Are the legs articulated? I, too, have a clue. IP: Logged |

Hi...this was purchased from an estate sale. I'm looking for information about it. Also, it has no moving parts. Thanks... IP: Logged |

The reason I asked is this forum is not a place for research on things you are planning to sell. It is hard to tell from the fuzzy photo, but these are not Egyptian hallmarks. The Egyptian silver standard mark was a cat from about 1906 to 1946 and then a lotus from then on. There would be secondary Egyptian markings as well that are not on your scarab. The star marking on your scarab appears to be the one that is used in Spain from 1934 to the present and indicates a .915 silver quality standard (a bit less than sterling which is .925). The second marking would be that of the maker but I am not an expert on makers in Spain and their marks so I can't tell you who it is. Likely your scarab was made during one of the constantly recurring cycles of international popular interest in ancient Egypt any time from 1934 to the recent past. IP: Logged |

Thank you for the info Kimo. The second hallmark is not in a hexagon, does that make a difference? For the record, I enjoy researching antiques, decorative and fine arts. I have collected some silver mesh bags and other smalls in the past but my interest is academic, not commerce related. I don't sell anything. I appreciate this website and the people who contribute information on it. IP: Logged |

From what I can tell the hexagon cartouche for the maker's mark on Spanish silver is somewhat common but not necessarily a rule. IP: Logged |
