My wife refers to this ring as a "poison ring" as the top of the ring is hinged and lifts up revealing a hidden compartment. One could conceal a poison substance in this ring and nonchalantly open it at the proper time to drop a fatal dose into your enemy's drink. It's done in the movies all the time.

It is an attractive ring depicting a scarab with red eyes and a green body, but does seem to be a sinister use of the scarab. The use of a scarab for this purpose does not seem to be reflected in Egyptian literature. Does anyone know why this use has come about?

Any marks? What are the stones? Dimensions?

Sometimes (in the 18th & 19th centuries) these "poison rings" were actually lockets for a memorial lock of hair. Locket rings rarely had a hinge, but I've seen ones (and in fact own one) that did.

Polly, this ring is not marked. When my wife brought the ring the top would open unexpectedly and one day she knocked it off. The jeweler had no problem repairing it and now the top is not loose. Jewelers really do wonderful work.

The ring is size 7 and the scarab or bug is 7/8 inches long. The stone are rubies for the eyes and emeralds form the body. Each side of the ring has three sapphires in the center of a flower. These flowers are made in white metal – maybe silver or white gold – and the rest of the ring is gold. It is an interesting ring and one that may have started out holding a locket of hair as your ring did.

If it's white gold it would probably not have held hair--I believe white gold wasn't invented until around WWI, and the tradition of wearing a lock of a loved one's hair died out around then.

It's a great-looking piece.

Hi!

If you ck out a Roadshow from Tucson they said it was a scent ring. You would place petals or some such so if you were passing something that was not sweet you would open the ring & smell something nice.

The other suggestions are also psbl, photos, relics etc.
