The Monday edition of the Wall Street Journal had an interesting article on fake jewelry showing up in the southwestern U.S. They quote the Indian Arts and Crafts Association as estimating that up to 90% of pieces held out as examples of Native American Craftsmanship are fake. Also they note that some of these fakes are of high quality and quite difficult to tell from authentic jewelry. There are laws requiring that the country of origin be stamped on the items, but these laws are obviously being ignored somewhere in the distribution line. It is really important to buy from a reputable dealer. I have noticed for some time that labels of origin on china are just little paper stickers. These, even if left on by the retailer, they are normally removed by the buyer with the result that the country of origin is lost forever for the second hand trade. IP: Logged |
