Good morning. Another beautiful snowy day here in CO. My question is about an unknown makers mark on a Sterling bracelet. Can anyone see what this says? I've tried everything and my eyes just aren't as good as they use to be. I can't make out with my magnification lens what this says. Is it a C* or an L* or a crescent before the A? I have tried various combinations and can't find any clue to the maker. Thank you in advance for your help.

As far as style and workmanship for this maker, if that will help ID the maker and period, the Bracelet is sterling with niello vines and leaves. The leaves have small diamonds flush mounted.

Stay warm and Thank you all.

The bracelet seems to be of fairly recent vintage. From the pictures, the black vines do not look like niello to me, they look more like they are incised and have an oxidized finish. I feel the bracelet likely hails from Asia, maybe Thailand.

Paul: Thank you for the reply, very informative. I have 3 shelves of books now and what I am looking for is never in any of them. Like the ladle I posted that is just impressed with a W and Fermore and a C in a diamond. It's too bad there wasn't some kind of manditory registery for silvermakers marks in this country. Some of these artists will perhaps be forever a mystery.

All things being equal, silver is just silver, but it is the early workmanship, the age and the design of the object that makes it a thing of beauty to protect for future generations whether it is coin, sterling, closed plate or OSP. I have heard from dealers at antique malls and donation centers that certain buyers are just buying up silver to melt it down for replating other victorian pieces or making small jewelry trinkets that can be sold at flea markets. Horror, history forever lost! While I don't have room for and can't afford to keep everything that I take a chance on (most of it is insignificant historically), I want to glean out, protect and collect the older pieces. Do you know if sterling, OSP etc can be stored in a safety deposit box or large home safe (like a gun safe) or is that environment bad? Thank you, again. Hilda
