Gilbert Oakes, like his father Edward, produced some of the finest 20th century handmade silver and gold jewelry. Most had a very Arts & Crafts feel. The one below, signed by Gilbert ("Oakes" in an oak leaf with an adjacent acorn) is handwrought in 14K gold with a central faceted deep green tourmaline, flanked by 3 pearls. What's especially interesting is that the central tourmaline has been rotated so that when worn, the rectangular stone sits on the finger at an angle instead of the typical symmetric orientation. It's a lovely ring, and is an example of the crossover between Arts & Crafts and modernist pieces.

Here's another somewhat unusual Gilbert ring that straddles Arts & Crafts and modernist styles, with one lapis stone slightly turned. Both this and the tourmaline ring above have the Gilbert mark of "Oakes" inside an oak leaf plus a single acorn:

Okay, just one more angled stone ring, with garnets and diamonds -- this time by Edward's granddaughter, Susan Oakes Peabody: Note the mark is Oakes inside an oak leaf with TWO acorns:

Great rings. Thanks. Is Susan running a studio/shop in the Chicago area? IP: Logged |
