These 3 ads ran in Life magazine in 1956 as a general promotion for gold-filled jewelry. Each features a close-up illustration of a piece by noted mid-century designer Henry Steig (NYC and Provincetown), as well as a celebrity giving that Steig item as a gift. The rest of each ad promotes GF jewelry in general, and shows additional pieces of garden variety, non-designer GF items. To be honest, I hadn't realized Steig worked in GF.

It's hard to know what to say about this; it is pretty amusing from this perspective. Look, famous people buying cheap(er) jewelry for their loved ones! By golly, I can be cheap just like famous people! Does it say who placed these ads? The Gold-Filled Council of America: We're second best! Seriously, it is interesting to see the Steig made pieces in gold-filled; one would not think so. It does make me want to take a second look at modernist gold filled jewelry. The watch in the second ad would certainly be cool to see! Thanks for posting, Brent IP: Logged |

Mary Grant Price was the second of three wives of Vincent Price and may be the one pictured in the third ad. She was a noted costume designer for films. Gold filled jewelry was certainly popular during the Victorian times - these ads highlighted the continued acceptability of this medium for the 1950s. IP: Logged |
