Here is an interesting antique (c. 1904) pin. It depicts a lion passant wielding a sword against an enameled sun motif background. There is an "M" in the design of the sun, and "'04" beneath the lion. The quality of this pin is quite fine, and it is hefty. The marks are ADLER STERLING N.O. Adler's has been a maker or retailer in New Orleans since 1898 (originally on Royal in the Quarter, now on Canal). I would like to know what the pin depicts--what organization, what event, etc.?

Something to do with Iran? From Wikipedia (Flags of Iran): "Late in the nineteenth century the Lion and Sun motif was combined with an earlier scimitar motif and superimposed on a tricolor of green, white, and red. With minor modifications, this remained the official flag until the revolution of 1979." [This message has been edited by salmoned (edited 11-18-2010).] IP: Logged |

GIven the origin in New Orleans, and the possible Iranian imagery, it could be some sort of fanciful symbol of one of the Mardi Gras Krewes who marked in the huge parades. Worth poking around to see what--early in the century all the cheap trinkets they throw in the parades today were real trinkets--silver and costume jewelry. IP: Logged |

Just as a starter, there was a "Prophets of Persia" Krewe in New Orleans that existed for a long time--and may still exist. Could this have been a badge of membership, or a token given out during the parade? IP: Logged |
