[26-1705] I recently found a sterling bracelet I've not worn in decades because it is too snug for my taste. I like a bracelet to move on my wrist and slip up and down several inches. This one is a series of highly distinctive, identical not-quite-flat, organic links. I wonder, could I have someone cast an additional link? But, if it had to be cast, what would prevent the person making the cast from keeping it and creating more of these (really quite nice) pieces of jewelry and selling them? I don't know any silversmiths, let alone a silversmith's character. OR -- is this fear unfounded? Is the mark of a famous maker-- even I had heard of this one! -- going to carry big penalties for forging, so that unscrupulous types wouldn't dare try to sell copies? I don't know if I am making mountains of mole hills here. I would simply like another link to a very nice bracelet and don't know how to go about it. It is a shame not to wear it as I have never had a bracelet feel so good. Hard to describe, but shape, weight, surface attract the touch-- it's slithery 'soft', almost like wearing heavy liquid. The metal feels as good as velvet to the skin! My daughter had never seen it before and even she, on trying it on, commented on how magical it felt. Advice? IP: Logged |

Hello bonniegaia! The obvious answer is, if the maker is still around perhaps they could do it for you. If not I'm sure one of our silversmiths can help you, or point you in the right direction. Enjoy the weekend! IP: Logged |

Thanks, Jersey! I'll have to get the bracelet out again and take a look at the marks. It is Georg Jensen, but I received it as a gift in early 1970s and I think it was 'new' then. It looks 'contemporary.' I can't check just now as I am still preparing food for a huge Steere family reunion manana! More later.... ~Bonnie IP: Logged |

....Back. The bracelet wasn't buried too deeply, so thought I'd add the marks tonight before turning off the light--the rest of the weekend will be hectic. On the clasp it does say 'Georg Jensen' in an oval of little dots. Under that: '925 S'. Over the Georg Jensen mark is some very faint writing. I have been puzzling over it. It's not only faint, but a bit worn. I can only guess at the letters. The first looks like a capital K, but it could also be a worn R. Second letter looks more like an upside down little 'v'. Could be a vowel, or an 'n'? The next letters are a bit like a couple 'o's' and I can't make out next which might be partially lost in the logo. The last letter looks like one of those 'o's with a slash through it. Does that sound familiar to anyone? Oh.... I almost forgot: there is a very clear number: '17 6.' Will it be hard to get a Georg Jensen extra link? IP: Logged |

Hi again! Another simple thought! Instead of adding a link, why not add an extender chain? In that way you would keep the originality of the piece & I might add, it would be a lot less expensive. Jersey IP: Logged |

Sounds like it might be the 176 bracelet (there was also a matching necklace), designed by Annette Howdle in 1967. A google search with her name added to Georg Jensen should bring up a couple of examples. ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

I would not be concerned about a local smith making a copy of your bracelet since it is a modern era one and any smith could simply just go out and buy one if they really wanted to make an exact copy - which I am sure they would not. The concern about forgeries of modern era silver focusses on those countries where they do not respect patents or copyrights or where their governments are unable to do anything about the problem. This is mainly countries such as China, Thailand, Vietnam, and similar southeast Asian countries, and also places like the poorer countries of Eastern Europe, some Latin American countries, etc. Those are the places that make and sell fake Rolex watches, fake designer clothes and handbags, pirated copies of movies, along with fake Tiffany, Cartier, and other big name brand jewelry The concern about forgeries of antique silver includes all countries including the ones I mentioned plus everywhere else. By forgeries I mean either completely newly made silver objects, and more dangerously old silver with added spurious markings. IP: Logged |

Sorry for delay - first the photo, then I will get around to answering the many responses. Thank you all for the contributions. Here is the bracelet. I put it on a slightly domed surface to catch the available light more realistically, finding it looked much better in natural light than flattened out by the flash. The links aren't flat, but are slightly curved so that the 'wings' of each link float slightly higher than the 'spine.' IP: Logged |

jersey - I don't think an extender chain would work in this instance, though I appreciate the economical suggestion. The weight of the bracelet would always respond to gravity, making the extenders more visible than the links, right? Let alone the look. With this bracelet, even the clasp is somewhat hidden. dragonflywink - kimo - your thoughts are sensible. I was over-reacting. Will an additional link be difficult or expensive to come by? How are the links made? a mold? would Jensen have kept the mold? IP: Logged |

Hi! I don't know the answer to the Jensen making costs, you would have to contact them. I cannot imagine it to be inexpensive. However I still think the answer to keeping the bracelet in it's original form, is to have just the round links added. Jersey IP: Logged |

Contact Jensen and ask if they have a link in their inventory they would sell to you. Or, ask one of their authorized U.S. jewlery retailers to look into it for you (the company might be more responsive to their retailers). If that does not work it would be no problem for any experienced silversmith to make one for you. IP: Logged |

Thanks Kimo, will contact a retailer and see what I can learn. .... ah.... here's a snag: my 20-something, slim-armed daughter just informed me that if I get another link *she* may not be able to wear the bracelet! I think she may be right:
Perhaps the most economical solution of all would be to give her the bracelet as a gift! ... if she wants it. You know, looking at the bracelet on an arm, I think the darned thing looks better OFF the arm, though it FEELS marvelous on. I am thinking that the necklace was a better use of these links as more links are seen at once. Now if only I'd been given the necklace... ~Bonnie IP: Logged |

I just did a quick search on howdle, georg jensen, and necklace, and in a few minutes I found a retailer who is selling the necklace that matches your bracelet. It has fifteen links in it. I have no idea of the price they are asking but if it is too high you could always keep looking as these are not one of a kind jewelry. Maybe you could buy and wear such a necklace in this pattern and give the bracelet to your daughter to wear? Then, one day you could give her your matching necklace? Just a thought. IP: Logged |

Kimo - yes, on dragonflywink's recommendation in an earlier post, I found that necklace! I am afraid it is going to be WAY out of my league, but I wrote for the info out of curiosity. 17 links would probably make it fit a bit tighter than on that display... I'd probably want to add the bracelet to it! But here I am needing to distribute & downsize rather than making new acquisitions. There are two daughters with slim wrists... If neither is crazy about it, I may be back asking advice. After wearing the bracelet myself for awhile, I realize the reason I rarely wear them any more: I just spend too much time on the laptop!
