One of the best books on American enamel is "Painting with Fire" by Jazzar and Nelson. The phrase used as the book's title was coined by Kalman Kubinyi, who, on moving from Cleveland to Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1950, wrote in his journal: "ahead was a wonderful world of color fused in glass…painting with fire!" Kubinyi was married to Doris Hall. Hall, born in 1907, attended the Cleveland School of Art, and studied printmaking with Kubinyi before they were married. She died in 2000, after creating a large and accomplished body of enamel work. Most of Hall's pieces were vaguely or explicitly figural. We've seen lots of lovely, brightly colored enamel pins featuring women's portraits. The abstract pin below is somewhat unusual. IP: Logged |
