I have acquired a sterling silver necklace and bracelet. Both are Taxco Los Castillo and are numbered 746.
The necklace has the eagle with the number 1 in the center. Can anyone give me a history about these items?

Sorry-I am looking for the year the pieces were made, and any other information anyone would have on these pieces. THanks.

I do not understand why a firm like Los Castillos would have items made in Mexico City and not in Taxco. Items marked with a specific model # can span several years. I am not certain you can identify the specific year it would have been made since silversmiths still make items they designed years ago.

Maybe I'm wrong and it wasnt made in Mexico City, but the info regarding the Taxco Eagle led me to believe that if the eagle had a #1 in the middle it was made in Mexico City. Is it possible the eagle with the 1 means something else?

Bille Hougart in the book "The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks", dedicates an entire chapter to the use of Eagle marks and the numbers associated with them and the items found with these marks and makers.

It appears that examples of the number 1 mark have been found on many items marked by Taxco makers. There are also examples of the numbers often associated with Taxco makers have been found on items marked with Mexico City shops.

Using these marks to possitively identify makers appears to not be a good idea.

Castillo marked items tend to always be of the highest quality and design.

A picture would help. The general design and style could let us form an opinion of when this was made. This tends to be a much more realistic way of dating than mark reading. Dates attached to marks apply only to very limited areas of Northern European silver smithing.

Thanks for the info-I will work with what I have received from this site! I cannot post a picture of my pieces-I do not have the technology to do so, but thanks-it would have been fun to have someone see them and discuss!
