Hi Everyone, I posted a question before about 925 Silver since it is so confusing to me. Now I am really stuck and searched for days on this piece without any luck. Please help. Sorry I don't have a photo...don't know how to download it here. It is a Marcasite Sterling Silver Slide Pendant with 2 Birds facing eachother in a romantic stylized "V" Shape bottom...looks Edwardian to me yet the stamp on the Back reads "TH 1BB 925". Does anyone have any idea of whom the maker is and the year? I would so much appreciate it! And could anyone recommend a real good silver book? Thanks guys! IP: Logged |

925 means the same thing as sterling. In some countries such as the US the convention is to use the term sterling and in others it is to use the term 925. Marcasite jewelry has been around for over a hundred years and falls in and out of popularity regularly. This year it is very popular and much of it is being made these days in Thailand and other Asian countries where it is given the 925 marking. The designs they use are copied from or in the style of Edwardian, art nouveau and art deco. Yours may or may not be one of these more recently made pieces, but unless you have some good provenance, since it does not have "sterling" or "hallmarks" you might consider this to be the most likely source. Hi Kimo~ Thanks for responding. Yes, I understand that 925 stands for sterling. The piece is definitely old...had that confirmed and I do not like to assume the latter because I gave away things that were worth double and triple. I was more curious about the 1BB stamp which I mentioned. Kathy

Silver jewelry is prone to having very myserious marks on it. The subject really deserves serious study. What stands in the way is that jewelry tends to be produced by very small firms that go in and out of business regularly. If it is any help, in the late 60's into the mid 70's a great deal of marcasite jewelry was made in Czechoslovakia. It was produced from old dies and moulds that had survived the war. I can remember seeing it at trade shows, where the sellers were manufacturers reps. Which indicates small scale production. IP: Logged |
