Hello all,

I recently picked up these two large early silver buttons. There are no marks, and the one on the right is very thin. Does anyone have any clues as to place of origin, and how they were used? The look like cufflinks, but might have been used on a coat as well. Is anyone familiar with old buttons?

Have collected buttons for many years and have several books, but they're all packed away at the moment. If I recall correctly, The Big Book of Buttons (collector's bible) shows some similar 18th century European coat and cuff buttons, but I don't recall seeing pics of them with toggle links. Removable buttons were not uncommon though, made them easy to use with other garments and for cleaning.

Thank you both for your input. I'm a sucker for any old silver, especially little things like these that don't seem to survive in great quatities. I got an unmarked chatelaine hook a few weeks ago, probably American but still impossible to say for certain.

Thanks again,

Brent

Your not a sucker but rather a dedicated collector of rare and unusual bits of history. When one of my relatives makes a negative type comment I also throw in 'I have an exquisitely refined taste for the better things in life and I am willing to be challenged by those fasinating mysteries life has to offer'.
Excuse me while I change out of the hip boots.
