[26-1760] Hi folks, I've been trying to identify the maker of this arts and crafts silver necklace. It's marked .800 silver and bears the mark C KAY in block letters. Any ideas out there? Thanks and happy holidays to all! Here are photos:

Hello, The C.KAY name was mentioned by a auction with another item (no photo showed) I'm sorry. The only information was that the firm was or (still is?) located in Hamburg (Germany). The other item was made around 1930 so that can be a time indication for your's? I hope to see more information because this is not everything about this firm of course! Succes! IP: Logged |

Hi Blackbird. Is this attractive necklace in your personal collection? I might call the design deco rather than arts and crafts but of course these things are subjective. Try researching Christoph Kay in Hamburg between 1920 to the early 1940s. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Kimo. I will follow up. This necklace is in my personal collection, and it's one of my great favorites. I wear it practically every day. Funny, but I never saw it as deco. Regardless of the style, I just like it! Cheers and thanks again! IP: Logged |

I agree that coming up with a name for a style can be really subjective in more cases that not. I can see the arts and crafts influence that you see and I don't think it is pure deco. If I were to try to put this into a box I would call it a 'mariage' of deco and bauhaus. The bauhaus elements I see are the very elongated links and the very clean and technical execution. The deco aspects to me are the plaques with the raised designs - there are all kinds of sets of three (three loop shapes, three raised button shapes) in them even including the overall hexagonal shape (hexagons are two sets of three). Also there are three elongated links between each plaque. Overall I think it is a very nice design and am glad to hear that you wear it. IP: Logged |

Your necklace sort of resembles a watch chain. Maybe with its size it was for a ladies watch. Either way it is an attractive piece of jewelry, and it's good to see that it used and enjoyed. IP: Logged |

This is all very interesting! The chain has always been special to me; it's good to know others' impressions of it. I would agree that it's a transitional piece, with Bauhaus influences, probably from the thirties. I would love to see more work from this firm, and am delighted to have a name to research. While I do see the watch chain resemblance, it is rather delicate for a watch chain. But research may bear out your ideas, and I will update you if I learn anything further. Cheers! Thanks so much! blackbird IP: Logged |

The large T shaped end suggests that this being a watch chain is a possible original use. The T end would go through a button hole and the watch would be attached to the other end. Since it is 800 silver it should be stronger than it would otherwise be were it sterling. Such a large T on the end makes it appear that it may not be the easiest of feats to thread that end through the small ring on the other end to make it into a necklace. It doesn't really matter though since I am sure it makes a lovely necklace. IP: Logged |
