My wife loves earrings and sometime ago she found these. I could not find a mark on them so we do not know where they were made. I suspect they were made in the last quarter of the 19th century and could be American or English. I did not notice until today that the nest is made of a white metal wire; I suspect for better contrast against the gold background. My wife does love bird nests, particularly with three eggs in them as we had three children. She also collects real ones but not until the birds have all gone. IP: Logged |

I really do not know how this is accomplished, but the ads on computer screen now include a Gorham birds nest serving piece. Tracking is pretty amazing. IP: Logged |

ahwt, those are terrific Victorian earrings--thank you for sharing! I love the dimensionality of the birds. There's so much going on here...classic Victorian "more is more" They look to be in nice condition, too, which is never a given with Victorian earrings. I think they could be continental, perhaps French. Interestingly, I just picked up a gold brooch with some very similar features: the same prong-set pearls, an element with two tiny green cabochons flanking a half-pearl, similar engraved leaves, and similar scrolls formed from flat wire... The brooch is hallmarked on the pin-stem but not very clearly and I haven't had a chance to scrutinize it yet, although I think I saw a bigorne. And although its subject matter differs, the brooch has the same maximalist feel as your earrings. It dates to about 1880, like your earrings. Once I have more info I will post an update. I suspect your wife's earrings, though a good size, are fairly lightweight? Or at least the stamped shell elements are fairly thin gauge. I would be interested in seeing the backs of the earrings too if you are able to post a photo. [This message has been edited by Paul Lemieux (edited 07-14-2017).] IP: Logged |

This is a picture of the back, but I have not been able to see any marks. Scott I am sure it was my browser that was tracked as ads like this happen all the time. Paul they are very light as on my scale the pair weight a mere 10 grams. IP: Logged |

Above are some pictures of a Bird’s nest serving piece by Gorham. This one is called a pudding knife although it looks more like a spoon to me. I really do not know how many pieces were made with this bird’s nest. I have seen others and some come with a bird and some come without the bird. Most of them were serving pieces of some sort. I think these were made sometime after 1870 but I do not know how long they were made. I put it after another thread I started some years ago simply because the bird’s nest design was more important to my wife collecting habits than the fact that it was made in silver. IP: Logged |
