My wife Margaret shop weekly on the Internet including e-bay and a number of other sources. We also enjoy going to the shows, to get out, take a little trip, meet with our friends and fondle silver. This last weekend we went to the Hillsborough show and attendance was down. Dealers complained that people would ask the price of something and then reply that they could "buy it cheaper on the net". I did find several key pieces for our collection including a Schulz & Fischer Medallion fork that I hadn't found on the net and also bought some pieces face to face cheaper than net listings. I do sell collectibles too and sell on the net rather than carry my inventory to a show , spend a weekend watching people walk by and paying $500-$700 for a booth. I really love shopping on the net but would hate it if there were no more shows to go to and we became computer chair potatoes. IP: Logged |

There is no question that we are experiencing a paradigm shift in the antiques marketplace. As people try different approaches, make committments, etc. the growing pains will be particularly painful for those of us stuck in the old models. It is almost like trying to guess what the next hot stock is going to be. The other side of this is that there is the possibility for a "stampede" mentality. The good part of that is that it at least hastens the final result; the bad part is that a lot of people get hurt. I can envision a spiral of show promoters losing business because fewer dealers bring their best merchandise and customers not showing up because the merchandise that is being shown is not the best or available for less (or at least apparently for less) on the internet. A new model will emerge, but regardless of what its embodiment is, we can be sure that the internet is going to play a giant role. IP: Logged |
