Baltimore was much like it is always, a great show. It may be the closest thing to a silver show there is. Prices continue to climb but still there were bargains to be had. Returning dealers seemed to all be saying the same thing, that attendance was off. Nevertheless, we did take note that from one day to the next everyone's inventory seemed to be less. New dealers all seemed to be having the best show ever. One dealer volunteered (in fact he couldn't contain himself) that after 1.5 days he had done $68,000 in business.

There were many beautiful and expensive things to be seen. On the silver front there was the usual great display of the still hot Shiebler medallion and as well as the Gorham and Whiting bug stuff and mixed metal pieces. There was a weak selection of Arts and Crafts. The jewelry was prolific. And there were some great large pieces of figural silverplate. The Southern silver market also appears to be holding strong.

Heard more stories than ever about dealers leaving the business and some just taking a break. Part of it seems to be the economy and part of it seems to be a general shift to the internet. One dealer speculated that the small shows will become more popular to do because they are less expensive, less demanding and can target a particular market. We did hear that the big Chicago show the weekend before Baltimore was better than ever, so hopefully, the big delicious shows will remain with us a while longer. It is so much fun to have this venue to shop and sell and schmooze.
