The Brooks Museum in Memphis, Tennessee is the site of the exhibition "English and American Silver 1720-1910: The Enlightened Years." It runs from November 3 through January 20, 2002. If any of our readers attend, we would love to hear about it. IP: Logged |

Having attended the opening of the Memphis show and having guest curated its American flatware component, I can add the following. The exhibition has several rooms with outstanding examples of English and American hollowware from some of the major private collections throughout the United States. There are pieces by Paul de Lamerie, Paul Storr, Myer Myers, Paul Revere, Tiffany, Gorham, et.al.--all beautifully presented. One whole room is devoted to some 250 pieces of American flatware of the 19th C.--Tiffany, Gorham, Durgin, et.al.,--that is displayed at eye level in wall-mounted cases. The flatware exhibit stresses the diversity of form and styles of the period and includes many unusual piece types. Historical styles represented include 1)Neoclassical--a variety of medallion patterns, 2)Gothic Revival--Gale's Gothic pattern and 3)Egyptian Revival--Gorham's Isis and Lotus. There are also examples of Naturalism--Gorham's Narragansett, etc., and of Japanesque--Gorham's Japanese and Hizen, Shiebler's Grass, etc. Visitors will not be disappointed. IP: Logged |
