Although not limited to silver, the Stuff of Dreams exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut is well worth a visit. It is comprised of one hundred objects drawn from the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. This is the first time these objects have ever been on tour in the United States. These truly magnificent pieces date from the Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century. There is Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewelry by Lalique and the Vever brothers, an unbelievable silver candelabra in the form of a twisting rose-covered tree trunk by Jules-Aurele Meissonier, a gilt bronze and Sevres porcelain clock that sat in Marie Antoinette's bathroom, the canopied gilded bronze bed which belonged to the courtesan Emilie Valtesse de la Bigne featured in Emile Zola's novel, Nana and so much more. The exhibition leaves Hartford on August 11, 2002 and then travels to the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama. This is a fabulous exhibition that you really should not miss! IP: Logged |
