The November/December 2004 issue of Saudi Aramco World has a article of nine pages with fourteen or so pictures of exquisite silver jewelry from the Middle East. The article includes an illustrated glossary of techniques and terms common to silver work in the Middle East. The pieces displayed and described were collected by Marjorie and David Ransom during and after their Foreign Service assignments in that part of the world. Their collection of more than a thousand pieces was displayed at the Bead Museum in Washington D.C. in 2003. For a review of that display go to www.beadmuseumdc.org and click on Exhibition and then on Past Exhibits. You can obtain a copy of this current issue of Saudi Aramco World by sending an e-mail to saworld@aramcoservices.com. It's interesting that in the Middle East, "Jewelry was not passed down in a family. A bride did not want to inherit someone else's jewelry." The Ransoms rescued many fine pieces of jewelry from the melting pot. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Thank you so much for letting us all know about this topic as the subject matter is not very well covered. I actually have never heard of the Bead Museum in Washington, DC so that is another valued bit of information. Just also wanted to mention that there was a catalog to accompany the Bead Museum exhibition. In reading the museum's background description of the exhibition, I found the discussion of the role of jewelry in the traditional way of life in the Arab world especially compelling. It speaks of the importance of the jewelry being an instrument for asserting a woman's identity, proclaiming status, providing a reserve of wealth and power, bringing beauty into life and lifting spirits. Sounds to me as if some things in life are timeless and borderless. IP: Logged |
