While in Puerto Rico last month we had an opportunity to visit the (relatively new) Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, in Santurce (part of the San Juan metropolitan area, and not far from the Condado hotel area). The museum itself is quite nice, but of particular interest here is the silver on exhibit in the earliest galleries. There are about a half-dozen pieces of church silver on display. One or two are either certainly or likely from other parts of the Spanish empire, but there are several works of 18th- and early 19th-century Puerto Rican silversmiths. Unfortunately photography is not permitted in the galleries, but in coming months I will try to get access to some photos to post here. Of particular interest is a jug made by Tomás Campeche in the late 18th century. The piece itself is remarkable, and Campeche is of note as a freed slave, an artisan in several media, and as the father of the famous Puerto Rican painter José Campeche. This is an ongoing exhibit. I recommend a visit to the museum if you're in San Juan, for a conference, business, or pleasure. [This message has been edited by FWG (edited 02-08-2006).] IP: Logged |

Wow, thanks for sharing this. When I think of Puerto Rico, I think of sun and beaches. Good to know we can also indulge our silver fetish when we are there too. We look forward to any photos you are able to provide. And thank you for the insight on Campeche. IP: Logged |
