Learn more about the decorative arts at The Bard Graduate Center! SILVER AND SOCIETY: CUPS, BASKETS, AND SERVICES Wednesday, May 10 During many periods of history, ownership of silver has defined the status and cultivated taste of its owners; thus it is through the study of objects fashioned from this precious metal that historians have been able to understand the social values of past times. An exhibition currently on view at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada, features a superlative collection of British and European silver. Peter Kaellgren, curator of the installation and author of an accompanying article in The Magazine Antiques (June 2000), will illustrate the objects on display, such as a superb 1725 Louis XIV-style toilet service by David Willaume I (1658-1740), eighteenth-century baskets by Peter Archambo I (flourished 1710-1759) and Charles Frederick Kandler (flourished 1727-1773), and a 1744 two-handled silver-gilt cup by George Wickes (1698-1761). These finely crafted works of decorative art will be interpreted in terms of their economic and aesthetic significance.
