The Bard Graduate Center has organized a lecture entitled Ethical Metalsmiths: Connecting People with Responsibly Sourced Materials. The lecture will be given by Christina T. Miller, co founder of Ethical Metalsmiths, an organization formed to address the issues of unethical mining operations. She will discuss contemporary mining practices and her organization's efforts to represent indeptendent metal artists and jewelry designers dedicated to improving the social and environmental record of the jewelry industry through application of best practice standards. Monday October 1, 2007 The Bard Graduate Center can be reached at 212-501-3011 or programs@bgc.bard.edu. IP: Logged |

We attended this lecture and found it very enlightening. Christina Miller is a wonderful speaker who educated us about the long lingering toxic effects of metal mining. It made everyone in the audience wonder what they could do to ensure that the metalwares they buy are sourced responsibly. Unfortunately, there is no foolproof way to do this. However, Christina did tell us about an intriguing event called Radical Jewelry Makeover sponsored by Millersville University's Jewelry and Metal Arts Guild. Donations are accepted of old jewelry which is then melted down and remade into new jewelry creations by the university's jewelry students as well as guest jewelers. Donations will be accepted until October 22, 2007. The resulting jewelry will be on exhibition for purchase on Friday November 2 and Saturday November 3 in Lancaster Pennsylvania.
