Conspicuous Consumption: Dining at Court in 18th-Century Europe Thursday, December 6, 2007 By the middle of the 18th century, aristocratic diners throughout Europe were treated to sumptuous table displays that emulated formal gardens. Centerpieces were created in the form of sculpture gardens, with classical deities made from porcelain and edible sugar paste. Shrubbery, gravel walks, brightly colored parterres, and lakes of looking glass sparkled in the candlelight at royal tables. Fragile Diplomacy includes a rare presentation of such a table setting. The Meissen “St. Andrew” service, sent as a gift to the Empress of Russia in 1745, features authentic recreations of sugar baskets with artificial flowers and a sugar baldachino, all prepared by culinary historian Ivan Day. In this lecture, Day will examine the material culture of the high-status table and provide a glimpse through the door of the palace kitchen, into the preparation of royal feasts.
