The Heard Museum A recent donation of more than 240 miniature silver seed pots was gifted to The Heard Museum. This collection, which is on display at the Sandra Day O'Conner Gallery, highlights the past 28 years of Norman L. Sandfield's years of collecting these unique vessels. Seed pots, which were historically pottery or ceramic items by American Indian tribal communities, were created to store seeds for the upcoming growing season. This collection highlights more than 70 different artists and their elaborately decorated works seed pot designs. Although not produced to be "functional", the seed pots are a combination of the traditional Navajo and Hopi style in a miniature form. In conjunction with this exhibit it a companion book Old Traditions in New Pots: Silver Seed Pots from the Norman L. Sandfield Collection by Tricia Loscher, curator at the Heard Museum. IP: Logged |
