I am still recovering from the 2-day-and -change silver conference which took place over the weekend at New York University. Suffice it to say that it was a wonderful event, attended by many of the top academics, dealers and collectors in the world. Aside from meeting our esteemed site publisher, the highlights were numerous. In the field of coin silver, we heard a number of fine talks on Myer Myers, Silversmiths of New York, the French influence on American silver, and others. When I have a chance to review my notes I will try to post summaries of the talks relevant to this forum. A few items of note: The Museum of the City of New York has mounted a wonderful new exhibition of silver, which we were privileged to view on Friday evening. A two-volume catalog will be available, and promises to be an excellent resource. Also, a catalog of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's silver collection is in the works. This may be one of the most important catalogs ever, if all goes well. Finally, Donald Fennimore at Winterthur is mounting an exhibit of American bird-back spoons, opening October 20, 2000 and running until April 20, 2001. He hopes to display the work of over 50 different makers, and the catalog will list all known makers of bird-back spoons. It should be great! IP: Logged |
