Silver topic of lectures at Madison show MADISON, Ga. — Known for showcasing American antiques and accessories with an emphasis on Southern pieces, organizers of the eighth annual Madison Antiques Show & Sale are proud to feature two experts on Georgia silver as this year’s guest speakers. Lecturers Charlotte Crabtree, owner of The Silver Vault of Charleston, S.C., and Tania Sammons, curator of the Owens-Thomas House and Decorative Arts for the Telfair Museum of Art, Savannah, Ga., will explore the rich contributions made to Georgia’s silver heritage by focusing on tradesmen from different parts of the state. Both lectures are free and take place in the 1895 historic auditorium of the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, which presents the show annually. The show will be held Feb. 27-28 with a preview on Feb. 26. Waiters to Watches: Georgia Silversmiths and Their Wares will be presented by Crabtree on Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. Crabtree’s presentation will focus on silver artisans living outside Savannah prior to 1850 and their significant contributions to the state’s silver history. In honor of the importance of Savannah in the history of Georgia silver, Tania Sammons will present Silver: Made and Collected in Savannah on Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. Sammons’ talk will focus on the production, sales, and collection of silver in Savannah from the mid-1700s to just before the Civil War. Building on the work of George Barton Cutten, author of The Silversmiths of Georgia (1958), and Ashley Callahan and Dale Couch, curators of From Sideboard to Pulpit: Silver in Georgia (2005), Silver: Made and Collected in Savannah will investigate Savannah’s affinity for the decorative and utilitarian creations of this prized furnishing. The twenty-two dealers who travel from as far away as Michigan and New Hampshire bring American antiques almost exclusively, with a large emphasis on pieces from the South to the show. The Madison Antiques Show & Sale is a fundraiser for the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, a multidisciplinary arts center. Contact: (706) 342-4743, IP: Logged |
