Mass Consumption: The Patrons of Paul Revere 6:30 pm, Caroline Wiess Law BuildingMuseum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet Street, Houston, TX Bayou Bend presents the Carol & Les Ballard endowed lecture series: "Mass Consumption: The Patrons of Paul Revere" by Jeannine Falino, Independent curator and consultant. Silver is among the most valuable of household goods, and it can serve as a means of understanding the social aspirations of colonial Americans. This lecture will provide a glimpse of the Boston society that purchased silver from the metalsmith and patriot Paul Revere II (1734-1818), and it will illustrate trends in silver ownership and taste in the mid-to late eighteenth century. Thanks to his surviving account book and a large body of surviving silver, one can form a reasonable assessment of Revere´s clientele and their membership within Boston´s religious, political, and social spheres. Revere´s own relationship to these groups as a part of his own multi-faceted activities will be analyzed for its impact upon his business. An assessment of the types of silver fashioned by Revere will offer surprising insights into the taste of Bostonians in the eighteenth century. IP: Logged |
