Moonlight in the Clouds at the Smithsonian: Silver and Gold thru November 8, 2009 In the beginning of the seventeenth century, Japanese craftsman were able to develop an array of technical advances in applying gold and silver to various base materials such as wood, paper, and silk. Gold and silver played an important role in the technical and aesthetic history of Japanese painting, calligraphy, lacquer, metalwork, and architecture, as seen in the thirty-two works on view. Although there will be limited silver objects on view, the influence of silver (and gold) as a design element for the Japanese culture is incredible. The Freer Gallery of Art IP: Logged |
