I'd be interested in members' opinions on the best shows to attend. I can hear people saying, "Well, it depends . . ." on where you live, what your interests are, etc., etc. I guess what would be most useful to me as a fairly new member are shows that would appeal to a newcomer for scope, quality, size. Any suggestions? TIA! [This message has been edited by witzhall (edited 04-05-2006).] IP: Logged |

Of course the most important factor would be where you live. If you gave a "general" area then people might be able to help you, otherwise there are just too many. IP: Logged |

Sorry, hello - of course that's right! My personal interest is New England, but I would like to know about the whole east coast as I occasionally travel south ... [This message has been edited by witzhall (edited 04-06-2006).] IP: Logged |

Can't help at all with the left coast, unfortunately, but in the northeast and Mid-Atlantic I really like the DC Big Flea, held in suburban Virginia about every other month, and Brimfield in Massachusetts, held three times a year. And for paper -- including trade cards of jewelers and silversmiths -- I love the Great Eastern paper show in Allentown, PA, held two or three times a year. The Atlantic City shows ("Atlantique City") also have a good reputation, but I've never been able to go. But your best bet is to go to any show in your area, then pick up advertising cards from dealers you like for other shows they do, or ask them what other shows they like. That'll get you a good start, regardless of where you are! IP: Logged |

The Union Antique Fair in Maine in August is a fun show. The availability of silver differs from year to year, but there's always something to bring home! One year a fellow had a huge box of coin spoons and offered them for $10 a piece. Some were worth just that (or less), but there were some gems as well. I must have spent 1 1/2 hours pawing through the box and went home with quite a pile! There's also New Hampshire Antiques Week, which is also in August, where there are numerous shows throughout the week. You see some wonderful New England antiques that week! Thanks very much to you two for your good suggestions – very worthwhile, by the sound of them! Hope someone will have equally worthwhile ideas for outwest on the left coast ... IP: Logged |

I Travel to Tuson, LV, LA, SF, and SeaTac on business from time to time, and find that for my money the best places are the smaller out of the way "Mom and Pop" store for finding bargains, (Tucson and LV)... For LA... Rose Bowl, Long Beach, Pasadena all good choices, But get there early, cause if you sleep in there is nothing left... I even bought 60 pieces of coin silver including some southern from a dealer who traveled to the Rose Bowl from Virginia... go figure... For North West coat (SeaTac) the Tacoma Dome has Antiques Shows regularly, and the Town of "Snohomish" I think I spelled it right, north of Seattle, and there is a sister city down near Portland I don't recall the name of. These smaller towns seem to be built around Antique stores and the business, and contrary to what appears to be common belief, there are a number of folks that still don't use the auction sites of the internet.
That is the best my memory serves for the left coast... I noticed no one mentioned Richmond Va., Charlotte NC, or Atlanta, GA as a place to check in the Mid-Atlantic, not the mention Charleston / Savannah... What about the south coast, Round Top in Texas, Houston, Austin and of course Big D (Dallas for all the Yankees :-), Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Mobile and of course FLA, all over the state... Pick a spot on the map in the US and I can show you coin and sterling silver...
Happy Hunting... "Smaug" IP: Logged |
