I would guess this handsome tradecard for the last incarnation of the Wilson family of silversmiths dates from about 1880. William Wilson originally worked in partnership with his elder brother, Robert as the justly famous and prolific R & W Wilson Company of Philadelphia. Robert first began in New York City in 1803. He was, to judge from this card, working in Philadelphia by 1812, on his own until joined by William in 1825. The pair were noted from the first for their quality of workmanship and design, much of it in the Rococo revival style that they helped champion. Robert died in 1846, though the company, under William's direction, continued to mark goods as R & W Wilson for another 30 years. In 1877 the company was disbanded and Wm Wilson & Son was first listed in the Philadelphia "Jewelers, Silversmiths & Watchmakers Directory." The new company continued producing goods of high standard, registering two trademarks in 1883, one for sterling and one for plated wares. They were last listed in the trade directories in 1904 and finally closed their doors sometime before 1909. I would travel a fair distance to see a complete survey of the Wilson's work; could any other firm provide so complete a cross-section of American silver design, from the Federal to the fantastic?

I was lucky enough to come across a second Wilson & Son trade card. It probably dates from the same time as the first, but the design is more bohemian artiste than japanesque. Having the original silk ribbon intact may be classed as a small miracle.
