I seem to spend almost all of my spare time trying to find out who made this or who made that, wishing there were better records of who made what, what marks they used, pictures of their work, so on and so on...

Are we collecting and documenting current research information for future silverphiles on silversmiths working today anywhere?

How about a registry, open to any silversmith, listing a biography, with their marks, pictures of their work, maybe discussions and interviews...

How about current experts and their biographies and views...

How much rich history is lost to time simply because we fail to capture and record what is available today just for the asking...

Just a thought...

Just a thought. You might try slogging through contemporary craft fairs and art exhibits. Then approach those who show silver. See where you get. My own experience was that there was vast uninterest in anything like this on the part of the silver makers. Perhaps others have had different experiences?

I was thinking along the lines of setting up a registry of sorts and contactings different organizations, schools and others that might be interested to allow each to self register, like a ongoing forum or something of that nature...

That is if anyone thinks this idea has merit...?

I think it is a great idea. So many smiths do not have their mark registered and it would be invaluable for posterity to have a record of current smiths. The list could get rather large.

Has anyone other than me actually attempted this? My experience was that contemporary smiths are totally uninterested in the project. I really hope my experiences are atypical. But, would really like to hear from those who have done this.

Does anyone recall this ongoing effort?

I may have missunderstood the purpose of the effort mentioned in the other thread... I assummed if wrongly, a list of working smiths for repairs and such... I was thinking of a biography (simple) and examples of their works and their Marks... Simular to what WEV has done so well for Early Smiths

Did I miss the Boat again...?

It would seem so.
