My local libary system has almost nil on silver. I am interested in American silver from 1835 on...I have Ter Rainey "Sterling Silver Flatware 1999", and Dolans "American Sterling Silver Flatware"....I have a limited budget and would like to learn more. I would like suggestions for a "hallmark" guide and also what you feel is the consumate book to own w/ approx cost and source if possible. This seemed a good place to start.....Thnx in advance... Check out SpencerMarks. They carry most of the silver books which are currently available, and at good prices. Also, check out Bibliofind for used books. If you have the name or author of a book in mind, Bibliofind will tell you who has a copy and how much it will cost. You can also search for the best deal on a particular book. For American silver, you absolutely need a copy of Dorothy Rainwater's Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers. The 4th edition came out last year, and at under $20 it is easily the best value in silver reference books. You also need a copy of Kovel's American Silver Marks. It contains many factual errors, and it is very weak on actual marks, but it is still the first place to start when looking up an unfamiliar silversmith. Hope this helps! Brent IP: Logged |
