Many here probably know that the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has the Jerome and Rita Gans Collections of English Silver, with most of it on display even now when the building is being extensively reworked. The Gans Collection is particularly strong in the work of Paul Storr and Paul de Lamerie, and large ornate pieces in general. The museum gift shop is currently giving away copies of the catalogue to this collection, along with two addenda, to those making purchases of a certain size -- I think it was $20 or more. If you have occasion to be in the Richmond area, it's worth a stop. The catalogue (by Joseph Bliss) and addenda (by John Culme) are excellent works. I particularly like the fold-out maps of old London showing many silversmiths' shops locations. They told me that there's a new catalogue coming out this year, which is presumably the reason for the stock reduction. IP: Logged |
