I recently picked up a letter from the Boston silversmith and jeweler Ralph Thurston Haskins to Nathan Fuller Matthewson of Matthewson & Allen, jewelry manufacturers of Providence RI: Boston, Decr 16th 1839 Mr Matthewson Dr Sir I arrived here Saturday eve – Saw your brother at Lowell – have the goodness to write to me by next Cors [?] – saying whether you will be at home all this week and if I must come to P very soon on account of the Carr Case – If you go south will you not buy some few Pearl Rings &c & some of Mr. Churchill's work — Yours R T Haskins Anyone have a guess who Mr. Churchill might be? Since going literally south would be the Atlantic Ocean, I am assuming New Haven, New York City, etc. IP: Logged |

At a quick glance, it could have involved the partnership of Churchill (William A) & Stanley (James) who were jewelers in New Britain, Connecticut at the time of Ralph Thurston Haskins' letter to Nathan Fuller Matthewson. Cors [?] = correspondence? [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 09-20-2008).] IP: Logged |

William Churchill is a good candidate. I assumed correspondence, as well, but best to leave it as a query. IP: Logged |

Just to maybe add a little more weight to this genleman as a candidate, Churchill is listed as a manufacturer in the 1850 and 1860 U S Federal Census's for New Britain, Connecticut with a jeweler's apprentice listed in his household in 1860. By 1860 his estate value is $65,000.00 which would make it seem reasonable that he was probably a successful jewelry manufacturer (and supplier).
