It seems there was a thread in this forum about George Dowig which may have been deleted. Oh well? George sold out in Philadelphia in 1770 (?), and there was a nice list of the items that were being sold in the posting. As a follow up to a possibly wild imagination, there is a 2 May 1772 record of Henry Demler being indentured to George Dowig in Philadelphia as an apprentice to be taught the art and mystery of a jeweler and goldsmith with all necessaries and mending included except clothing. The term was for five years. And then In 1789 a George Dowig disposed of his remaining stock in trade by lottery in Baltimore, Maryland.

quote: I don't recall such a post or even deleting it but I suppose it could happen. There is only one mention of George Dowig: Flights of Fancy - American Bird-Back Spoon Exhibit at Winterthur IP: Logged |

I found it. The title was For Sale, a Negro silversmith. And of course the George Dowig name couldn't be searched because it was part of an image. Sorry for the trouble Scott. IP: Logged |
